  • Make sure to wash all of the vegetables and fruits that you’ll be using. It is best to purchase produce from a health food store or a local produce market. If you are buying them from the local supermarket, washing them will ensure that you have removed any lingering dirt, bacteria and pesticides. Since you'll be juicing the fresh produce with the skin on, this is particularly important. Make also sure that your cutting board and utensils are clean as well.
  • Many fruits and vegetables do not have to be prepared further than cutting them up into smaller pieces to fit inside the juicer. However, most pits and larger seeds will need to be removed, in addition to the rind from some citrus fruits such as oranges and grapefruits. Many melons can be juiced with their peel and all. It is best to investigate how each fruit and vegetable should be juiced before you attempt to use it in a recipe.
  • If vegetable juicing hasn't been in your diet until now, start by making your vegetables about 25% by volume of the fresh produce you are juicing  and have a "simple" base of something like celery, cucumber, zucchini, carrots and apples. If you'd like to add many vegetables in your diet, consider creating simple but different juices a few times a day, instead of creating one complicated 12-veggie juice once a day.
  • You might think that fruits like bananas or avocados will help to make the bitterness that comes from some vegetables go away, but as we said it before especially these two can clog your juicer and definitely perform better in smoothies.
  • If you're a newbie do not have the urge to dive head first into a juice cleanse or detox juice. Most likely your body won't be able to take it in. Juice-only cleanses have a good place in a healthy diet or helping your body get rid of some issues, but it sure is not for people who have never juiced before. This is a very important point to consider because otherwise you’re not only setting yourself up for failure but also risking your health.
  • Consider adding lemon or ginger to your vegetable juices. Lemon adds a ton of zest while ginger gives it a great kick. Lemon rinds are OK to juice but most people find them a little too strong at first. They can also help you curb your appetite. On the other hand a 1/2-inch piece of ginger can help to mask some of the unusual raw tastes coming from the veggies that you're not used to yet. And ginger is a great source of wellness in itself.

Nothing is more energizing than a quick glass of home-made vegetable juice. Do not buy V8 or a similar product when you feel like boosting yourself up with a vegetable juice. Bottle products contain many artificial ingredients and preservatives in them and when we talk about fresh juicing we certainly do not refer to those products.

Juicing at home only takes a few minutes to do, but will offer your body huge benefits for a long time -- such as weight loss and more importantly assistance to cure and prevent common health issues.

Furthermore with juicing, there is no cooking, no pans to scrub or time wasted eating a meal. Juicers are relatively quick and easy to clean so you can get on with your day. There is no such a thing as a vegetable juicer that would be different than a fruit juicer for instance. All juicers can juice both vegetables and fruit. However some do better with leafy greens and wheat grass. The top reason for juicing is to extract nutrients each fruit and vegetable contain, and generally speaking the goal is to get the smoothest juice with the least amount of pulp. 

What are your options to juice vegetables?

Although you can use a blender to juice your vegetables​, and you can be sure to obtain nutrition-packed beverages from raw fruit and vegetable of your choice, be aware that juicing and blending are significantly different and so are the beverages they produce. With a blender you would be creating more like a smoothie with ton of pulp making it more filling.

However when we talk about juicing we usually refer to extracting only the fluid and nutrients separating the liquid from the solids in raw produce, therefore the fibrous or pulpy remains are discarded and not consumed (at least inside the juice.)

And the best way to obtain this kind of juice for any raw produce (fruit or vegetables) is using either a centrifugal juicer or a masticating (slow) juicer. There is also a third type which is triturating juicer that presses the produce.

Although all of these types will be able to juice hard vegetables such as celery, carrots, beets, apples and pears really well, not all centrifugal juicers are capable of doing a good job with leafy greens such as kale, chard, collards, spinach and lettuce. And if you want to juice wheat grass you should definitely get either a masticating or a tritulating juicer.

Centrifugal Juicers in a Nutshell

This is the type that separates the fiber from the juice by spinning. It juices the fastest but it's noisy due to the fast spinning motor. This rapid movement also generates higher heat which can kill some of the nutrients in the raw produce.
